Ttwo-volume work presents the extraordinary panorama of Italian painting from 1300 to 1610, including all the great masters and their most famous works, in more than a thousand colohis substantive or reproductions and close-up details. The first volume is devoted to the artists who dedicated themselves to lines and drawing, starting with famous fresco painters like Giotto and Piero della Francesco and moving on to Botticelli, Perugino, Pinturicchio, and Michelangelo. The second focuses on the work of the painters who developed their pictures through color, including Leonardo, Raphael, and the Venetians Tintoretto and Titian. Throughout both volumes, the texts are written in a lively style and convey a vivid impression of the artist's personalities, the circumstances in which they worked, their social standing, and even the relationships of the painters among themselves in various artistic centers. The two volumes are contained in a sturdy, illustrated slipcase, and delivered in a cardboard tote. Beautifully photographed paintings and sculptures in these books. The text is also a pleasure to read and, though lacking in footnotes and bibliography, is obviously by academic authors.
