From the Reign of Hyrcanus (135 B.C.E) to the Completion of the Babzlonian Talmud (500 C.E.)

These books, being over a hundred years old, are survivors, and, like all survivors, they have sustained damage with age. Their spines are faded, and are dirty at their tops (pictured). Book has come loose from its spine, and another has an end leaf loose.

They were published by The Jewish Publication Society of America, and were written by Professor Heinrich Graetz (October 31, 1817-September 7, 1891). Professor Graetz was among the first historians to write a comprehensive history of the Jewish people from a Jewish perspective. History of the Jews is considered his magnum opus. He was granted the title of Honorary Professor by the University of Breslau in 1869, and his work became very popular and influential in his time.

Graetz, Heinrich. HISTORY OF THE JEWS. Philadelphia: Jewish Puplication Society OF America, 1898. Cloth, 8vo. Complete in six volumes. Fold out maps at the back of volume 6. Hirsch, and then at Breslau University; due to anti-semitic rules, however, he presented his Ph. D. Thesis at Jena. The History of the Jews, originally written in German, “was the first comprehensive attempt to write the history of the Jews as the history of a living people and from a Jewish point of view, ” and Graetz's life work. Ex library with usual markings, spines slightly faded, very good condition, much much better than usually seen.
